Burrowing Owl Estate Winery located in Oliver, British Columbia was the first stop on our spring break adventure. As residents of this diverse and beautiful province, Oliver and the surrounding wine country area is far from new to us. Staying at the Burrowing Owl during shoulder season surpassed our expectations and provided us with an exceptional escape from the everyday aspects of life. Our Burrowing Owl stay was an exceptional case of mindfulness.
Special packages are available during shoulder seasons and we purchased a package that included our night’s stay, dinner, and breakfast. If you are considering a visit to BC’s wine region, here are a few of the perks we found while visiting Burrowing Owl before the hustle and bustle of the busy summer season begins.
Peace and Quiet
Did you hear that? Neither did we. The Burrowing Owl Estate was exceptionally quiet and tranquil during our stay. With only one other guest room booked out for the evening, we eased into the calm, pristine, clear air and wandered about the vineyard snapping photos and marveling at the landscape.
A Room of Luxury
A comfortable room is one thing. A fabulously appointed room is quite another. The large guest room boasted a king size bed that when accompanied by the still and silent night, provided a deep and rejuvenating sleep. In addition, the guest room is thoughtfully arranged with a fireplace, a soaking tub, shower, complimentary use of robes and slippers, and a mini fridge to chill any wine purchases from the tasting room.
Take My Breath Away
The panoramic views did not disappoint. Despite the vines lacking their lush green foliage, rows upon rows of neatly manicured varieties lay against a backdrop of mountainous terrain. The birds chirped eagerly in anticipation of spring as they flitted about. Though we were not fortunate enough to see an actual burrowing owl, we more than pleased to have our wine tasting fee be donated to the society in preservation of the species.
Gourmet meals are apparently the norm at Burrowing Owl and despite having few guests, the cuisine was exceptional. Traveling for us can be cumbersome at times with regards to menu choices. We both choose to eat a diet without dairy, grain, and sugar. Calling in advance to book our reservation allowed Chef Stephen Lusby-Blackburn and his staff to accommodate our food choices.
Yet accommodate is far from what I would call it. Every meal at Burrowing Owl was cooked to perfection. The three course dinner was exceptional and we delighted with every bite. Our server, Ingela, is not only most pleasant and attentive, but also exceptionally informed. She guided our menu choices with ease accompanied by immense knowledge of the options available to us. The chef surprised us with a treat of chocolate sorbet at the end of our meal. He prepared the treat in advance of our arrival as he thought given our dairy intolerance, we wouldn’t often have the opportunity to enjoy a serving of ice cream. Going the extra mile seems to be a staple at Burrowing Owl.
Breakfast, the most important meal of the day, was no exception. We dined on poached eggs, cooked to our individual liking, over a bed of gluten free toast and sauteed spinach. We sipped fresh squeezed juice and enjoyed seasonal fruit while taking in the morning sun across the vineyard.
Burrowing Owl Above and Beyond
In addition to the highlights above, our stay was more enjoyable due to these additional touches.
- Chilled wine in our mini fridge was waiting for us upon our arrival.
- With so few guests, the hot tub and stars were ours alone for the evening.
- The vineyard dog, named Karma, is simply the sweetest soul and one of the best retrievers I have ever seen.
- We paid for our package stay in advance. The bonus was there was no restaurant bill at the end of our meals.
- Burrowing Owl is a working vineyard. Having the experience to watch the day to day operation of the estate is a wonderful peek into another lifestyle.
