The Library Book is not only a historic looking and simply beautiful hard cover book to look at. It is also a book that, in my opinion, should be read by every lover of books. It is not often that I recommend a book through this blog platform. Most times, I save my reviews of books I am reading for the exclusive audience of my newsletter subscribers.

The Library Book though, is simply one I must share with you. Written by Susan Orlean, it is rich with historical detail. The sheer volume of research Ms. Orlean must have engaged in to create such a complete account of not only the Los Angeles city library fire of 1986 but also the intricacies of libraries in general is a feat not for the faint of heart.
To be honest, I am a bookstore kind of girl, something about a fresh, new page and all. I do visit our local library on a regular basis though and have immense support for and appreciation of libraries in general. As an author, I also use the plentiful resources of online libraries world wide. The library, much like a coffee shop, tends to be a bustling hive of activity, which for me is not conducive to getting lots of work done. It is however, a great place to people watch!
In The Library Book, Ms. Orlean delves into the history of libraries as well as the human tendency to burn books. Some facts quite literally astounded me. Others made me mourn for the loss of such unique and beautiful works of literature through the ages. The history of the Los Angeles city library is a colourful one and that in itself is a reason to pick up this title.
If you are a book lover, you will appreciate the deep nature with which books are regarded by so many. You will empathize with the library staff and the residents of the city of Los Angeles as their library burned. You will be bolstered by the willingness of strangers to work together to do whatever they could to save what little remained after the fire burned for so many hours.
If you are a book lover, I am confident, you too, will enjoy the knowledge you gain by reading The Library Book.
Happy reading friends!
